Greater Manchester Fire Authority is responsible for the provision of the Fire Service in the area of Greater Manchester, that covers an area of 500 square miles with a population of approximately 2.5 million. The main aims of the authority are to:-
Identify and reduce risk from fire, which affects all the people, who live and work in or visit the area.
Respond to fires and non-fire emergencies.
STRUCTURE AND RESOURCES
The whole area is made up of 10 metropolitan district councils Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford & Wigan Forty one Fire Stations are strategically located throughout the County to ensure that efficient and effective fire cover is provided
The total number of uniformed personnel is 2135 that work in the various disciplines within the operational role, including Fire Safety and Training Department staff.
There are 63 uniformed Control Room personnel whose specific duties are receiving emergency calls, mobilising resources and other support tasks in-line with the core duty.
383 Non-Uniformed personnel are employed, who support the various functions within the organisation in achieving the role of a Fire Service.
The Authority provides the service with the most up-to-date, modern Fire Engines and associated equipment. A range of Special Appliances are available for the many varied incidents which the brigade attends, e.g. Foam Tankers, Hydraulic Platforms, Hose Layers, Inshore Rescue Boats, Special Incident Unit and Enhanced Rescue Units. In total there are 67 Front Line Appliances and 29 Special Appliances.
